Arya Samaj Marriage Rituals performed by Panditji 

Introduction:

Among the 16 Sanskaras, Vivah Sanskar or Marriage has the greatest significance. Arya Samaj Wedding rites originate from the Vedas. They are devoid of idol worship.

The rituals not only bind the bridegroom and the bride in marital bond of love and respect for each other but also lay down a code of conduct towards the family and society of which they are an integral part. Every phase of the ceremony is infused with symbolic meaning and spiritual significance.

Vedic Marriage Ceremony:

Time Required: 2 Hours

Rituals:

  1. Swagat & Introduction (Welcome)

A welcome ceremony is hosted to extend greetings to the bridegroom, bride, their family and friends.

  1. Kanya Agaman (Arrival of the Bride)

The Bridesmaids and the father escort the bride to the Mandap.

  1. Jai Mala (Exchange of Garlands)

Panditji guides the couple to the Mandap. Bride welcomes Groom with a floral garland and Groom garlands Bride. This exchange symbolizes formal acceptance and respect.

  1. Madhupak (Offerings)

The bride offers a mixture of Honey and Yogurt to the groom. Honey symbolizes the sweetness of eternal love and yogurt for the sake of his eternal good health and nutrition.

  1. Kanya Daan (Giving hand of the bride)

It is believed that the daughter (Kanya) is the prime wealth of a Hindu house, who symbolizes the Hindu Goddess of Wealth (Lakshmi). Bride’s parents will place her hands into the Groom’s hand and pour holy water over them to finalize the gesture of gift-giving (transfer of wealth). Bride’s father requests Groom to accept his daughter as an equal partner in all walks of life. It is noted in Vedic scriptures that there is no “Daana” (gift) greater than Kanya Daan (giving a daughter’s hand in marriage). Groom promises to accept Bride as his equal life partner.

  1. Thread Ceremony and Yagna

During this ceremony the groom wears a sacred thread. This is the initiation ceremony and symbolizes the transition from a boy to a married man. The couple worships fire during the yagna and give alms. Fire is the witness to the sacred ceremony and hence the vows are always taken in front of the fire.

  1. Paani Grahan (Accepting the Hand)

The bridegroom holds the hand of the bride and both of them solemnly pledge before God that they have become one and will forever love each other and remain mutually devoted for the rest of their lives.

  1. Shila Rohan

A rock is placed in the northeast corner of the Mandap. While Bride places her right foot on the piece of rock. Groom recites a hymn the Ashma Bhava, The statement is to encourage his wife to be as strong as the rock, to be firm towards any difficulties of life they may face together. Rice and flowers are sprinkled on the couple by her parents, relatives, and friends.

  1. Mangal Phera

Bride’s brother puts rice in the hands of Bride & Groom to offer to Agni (the Lord of Fire) who dispels darkness and ignorance while leading into light and knowledge. The couple then walks around the sacred fire. Each round represents the four basic goals of human life:

Dharma: Moral sense to lead a good life

Artha: Financial prosperity the

Kama: Blessing for strong, virtuous children and to share the responsibilities of home

Moksha: Self-restraint and eternal physical, mental and spiritual strength

Together the four goals symbolize the couple’s commitment to each other and the community.

During the first three rounds, Bride leads Groom and during the last round, Groom leads.

  1. Saptapadi (Seven Steps)

The bride and groom take seven steps forward together, symbolizing the beginning of their journey through life.

These steps signify the guiding principles of life. Each of these steps represents the vows made by the couple:

First Step: To Nourish each other, both of us will work together to bring Grains to our home

Second Step: To Strengthen Our Marital Life, will get energy from that Grain

Third Step: We will earn Money honestly, which is needed for our household requirements in life

Fourth Step: The Grihastha Ashrams is considered as the best Ashram, so the fourth step is together will continue to increase happiness in life.

Fifth Step: With the thought of sacred mind, wishing the best offspring to be debt free from Pitra-rina.

Sixth Step: Efforts to stay away from diseases with seasonal dietary exercise

Seventh Step: Husband and wife should be friendly with each other

These 7 steps are a pledge to make marital life strong. These 7 steps are the foundation of the householder’s house.

With these seven steps forward the couple is now united and will pray for the blessings from God. The father-in-law offers the bride a sacred necklace.

  1. Sindhoor Daan

The bridegroom applies Sindhoor (Red Powder) in the parting of the bride’s hair and welcomes her into his life as his eternal partner. The newly wedded couple touches the feet and takes blessings from the parents of both families.

  1. Akhand Subhagyavati

Married women from the bride’s family come forth to wish her eternal happiness by blessing her Akhand Subhagyavati bhava.

  1. Aashirvaad and Shanti Path

 Introduction:

Sanskars have an important role in the progress of gross and subtle body and soul of human beings.

Etymology of the word Sanskar :- The word ‘Sanskar is formed by the suffix ‘Ghan’ in ‘Kra’ metal, prefixed ‘Sama’.  According to Panini’s sutra “Samparupaybhyah: Karotau Shushene”. “Those with whom Shariadi is well-known are called Sanskar”
“Varikshan Gunantaradhanam Sanskar’: The transfusion of qualities is called Sanskar in the words of sage Dayanand Saraswati.

“Cultured body and soul can be attained to dharma, artha, kama and moksha by being cremated, and children are highly qualified. That is why it is very appropriate for all human beings to perform Sanskars.

  1. Garbhandhan Sanskar (Pregnancy Rites): This sanskara is performed after marriage and before the conception of a child. In this sanskara, the couple chants vedic mantras for a healthy, loving and happy married life and the wish for a son or daughter that would bring new joy in the home. This sanskara is performed for the fulfillment of one’s parental obligation and a continuation of the human race. This is a fervent prayer for the impregnation of the foetus with the life-giving soul force. Garbha means womb and Dhana means give or donate.
  2. Punsavan Sanskar : The time of “Punsavan Sanskara” is in the third or fourth month of Pregnancy. The Punsavana (Protection of the Fetus) Sanskar is performed for the Physical growth of the Child
  3. Simmantonnayan Sanskar : The time of Simmantonnayan Sanskar is the seventh month of Pregnancy. The Parents to be and their relatives offer Prayers to the almighty for the Mental Growth of the Child.
  4. Jatakarm Sanskar : The Jatakarma Sanskar is to be done immediately after the birth of the child. This Sanskar is done to welcome the new born child. The father writes “Aum” on the tongue of the child with a thin bar of gold dipped in Honey. He whispers the word “Vedo-Asi” (You are Veda – Knowledge) in the ear of the child.
  5. Namakaran Sanskar : The ‘Naming ceremony’ should be performed on the 11th Day after the birth of the child.
  6. Nishkraman Sanskar : The Nishkranana Sanskara Is Performed after the 4th Month of Child’s Birth. During this Sanskar the Child Is taken out of the home for the first time to be exposed to different Nature Elements.
  7. Anna-Praashan Sanskar : Anna Means Food and Prashana mean Eating, Feeding Thus, giving Solid Food to the Child for the very first time performs this Sanskara.
  8. Mundan Sanskar : This Sanskara can be performed between the ages of 1-3 years old. In this sanskara the hair from the child’s head is shaved off for the very first lime. Prayers for
    good health and development are being recited.
  9. Karnavedh Sanskar : The piercing of the lower lobes of the child’s ears at the age of three performs the karnavedha sanskara. Prayers are offered to the almighty for the physical well being of the child.
  10. Upanayan Sanskar : Upanayana or the thread ceremony is performed anytime between the ages of five to eight years old. Upa mean approaching towards and nayanam means leading. In this sanskara the child is given the yajnopavit (sacred thread), which is made from
    three strands representing the three letters of aum. The three strands also
    symbolize the three discipline of life, which are knowledge, action and devotion.
  11. Vedarambh Sanskar : This Sanskara is done immediately after the upanaya sanskara. Now the child becomes a student. The child will now gain knowledge from the vedas and other
    religious text as well the other branches including mathematics and science. Thus
    the child will be able to progress in life spiritually as well as materially.
  12. Samavartan Sanskar : Between the ages of twenty-one and twenty-five years this sanskara is performed. This student till now has completed all higher studies and starts a new life of
    self-realization and independence.
  13. Vivah sanskar : Vivaha sanskara is performed when the student decides to get marry. This is one of the most important sanskara among the sixteen vedic sacraments. This is the
    foundation that forms the very basis for a coordinated family life.
  14. Vaanaprasth : At age fifty-one years old, a person performs the vaanaprastha sanskara by
    relinquishing all livelihood from which he or she will gain personal benefits. All the
    family responsibilities will be given to the children.
  15. Sannyaas : This sanskara is performed at the age of seventy-five years. In this sanskara a
    person forsake all material things and starts to lead a life of meditation and contemplation onto the almighty.
  16. Antyeshti sanskar : The Antyeshti is the last sanskara performed when the individual dies. After death this sanskara is performed when the body is cremated. As the Atma (soul) is
    immortal, it cannot be destroyed; but the body which is made of clay, water, fire, air
    and ether once again returns to these elements.
